Binatbatan is here; rejoice!
Binatbatan festival commemorates Vigan City's abel craft. It originally started in 2002 to showcase the weaving industry that is said to predate the arrival of the Spaniards; and it is also another way to show the creativity of the Biguenos with its many cultures and arts that are lively exhibited in this festival.
Biguenos are huge fans of vibrant events — there are many festivals that prove this to be true. The Binatbatan festival is one of them! It comes from the word 'batbat', a pair of bamboo sticks used to separate cotton pods that come from a tree called kapas sanglay. Through this festival; traditional dances and abel crafts by different individuals are revealed and displayed for all to see. There are references to the coming of the Spaniards and is wonderfully conveyed through dances, crafts and each creative spark that every Bigueno has. Still, the pandemic is still upon us. Let us always remember to wear our face masks and keep our distance throughout the festival! And if possible, stay at home and always disinfect your hands.
The Binatbatan festival is an important event that helps those in the hand-loom industry to be known throughout the world. May we celebrate it with love and passion for all our fellow Biguenos.
